Firefly Adds Reference Images to Kling, but the Reference Still Needs a Brief
A reference image tells the model more than a longer prompt can, but not which details you intend to preserve. Adobe's September 18 Firefly update adds reference images to Kling 3.0 Omni and expands GPT Image 2 to ten aspect ratios on the web and in Boards.
Citation-ready: Adobe's Firefly update expands reference-image and framing controls; describing the intended colors, texture and composition remains distinct from proving that a generated result preserved them.
Evidence boundary: Adobe product update and developer-described Chance image support. No generation-quality test, Adobe-Chance integration or guarantee of reference fidelity is established. Publication note: Prepared for September 21, delayed by a deployment failure, and published September 28 after source revalidation. Original event dates are retained; this is not a new September 28 announcement.

What happened and why it matters
The new controls expose three independent decisions: what an image contributes, what the words request and how the output is framed. Treating one reference as all three can hide the intended change.

An aspect ratio is not a creative direction
Adobe says the Kling reference option works in Video Generation and Boards. The ten GPT Image 2 ratios likewise apply to web Image Generation and Boards. Longer prompts have reached web image and video generation, while the update says that expansion for Boards is still being worked on.
Start the brief with the relationship to the reference: retain the palette, borrow the lighting, or reinterpret the composition. Then specify the frame. A square output may force a different arrangement from a wide video; that is a composition decision, not necessarily a model error.
A useful comparison keeps the original beside the result
Describe two or three observable qualities before generation, then check the returned image against that list. Keep subjective preference separate from whether the requested detail is present. This is a proposed review method, not a test performed for this article.
Our earlier product-shoot report concerned a tutorial and preserving a commercial object. Today's distinct change is the model's reference input and framing controls, applicable beyond product photography.
Make the reference description checkable
Chance AI's iOS developer description, checked September 28 with version 2.0.6 listed, supports questions about visible style, colors and clues in an image. A bounded use is to describe those cues, compare the answer with the source photo, and mark which ones should remain in the next version. Our style-from-a-picture guide separates visible observations from tentative style names. Chance is not shown controlling Firefly or validating its output. FAQ
Are the longer web prompt limits also confirmed for Boards?
The September 18 update says the team is working on that capability for Boards; it should not be described as already available there.
